Today we begin reading the Sermon on the Mount by looking at The Beatitudes in Matthew 5. The Beatitudes lead us beyond "niceness" to a lifestyle that requires faith, humility, love, and a willingness to hurt on behalf of the neighbor, the poor, the sinner--those whom Jesus came to save and calls us to love. The good news is, Jesus lived this kind of life. He followed it all the way to the cross and the grave. And it was his seeming defeat that, in the end, was the key to God's victory in and through him.
