Dissatisfied and Content (The Book of Philippians)

Experiencing peace and hope in a world that is less than it ought to be

Fall 2016

At the end of his letter to the Philippians, Paul insists "I've learned the secret of being content in any and every situation." This is a striking comment for a man whose letters are filled with dissatisfaction with himself, with his churches, and with the world in general. Even so, apparently he is convinced that he (and we) can experience contentment. That paradox frames this study of Philippians, as we ask how Paul could experience peace in a world he found so lacking.
